T-1 - The last day of peace

You know the conversations that you have with people that sound like a great idea at the time, but when it actually comes round to doing it, it sounds like a terrible idea? Well, I tend to have more of those than most people, but it does lead to doing some fun things (running a marathon and setting a world record to name but a couple).

This one, though, has me quaking in my boots. Let's start from the start. There is a small range of food that I hate. Not dislike, not that I will happily eat around, but actively despise, and will refuse to eat. For some reason, they tend to start with the letter T - tomatoes, tuna, tea (ok not a food, but you get the picture). Not a hugely picky list, but one that all my friends and family know well. My wife has a similarly short list - peppers, marmite, coffee.

For most people, it would be enough to just avoid those foods, but not us. I heard Heston Blumenthal (damn you, Heston!) on the radio last week saying that you can take any food that you don't like, eat a little of it each day for a month, and you'll start to like it. I mentioned this to my wife, who automatically brought up my aforementioned list and started laughing, saying we should try it. The conversation quickly ran out of control, ending up with both of us choosing two things to try and like. Mine are tomatoes and tuna fish, hers are peppers and coffee.

This all sounded like fun, and made for a good story around various dinner and pub tables, until I realised that we said we'd do it for the month of March. Which starts tomorrow. Gulp. or retch. I haven't decided which. The idea of eating raw tomatoes and tuna fish for the next month makes my stomach turn, but the idea of trialing the idea also excites me. So I decided to start this blog to keep a record of my reactions, and feelings towards the food. Who knows, maybe this is the start of something new and wonderful...but still, damn you, Heston!
